Chakra Balancing

This page describes a number of exercises that one can use to remove blockages, balance chakras and heal them, handle kundalini, or to the extent that one has problems with it, ease the kundalini process in general. It also contains some other things of a mostly spiritual nature.

The methods I use are mainly based on kinaesthetic sensations, i.e. the actual feeling of something moving in or near the body, and I will generally assume the ability to feel and work with such sensations. Some of the exercises also assume that the person doing them have an active kundalini in the sense that one is able to feel “energy flows” for extended periods of time, and be able to direct the way they move.

Some exercises include directing the flow through chakras. There is a brief introduction and some background information regarding such flows at the chakra page, which may be good to read first. The page on kundalini may also be good to have read to understand some of what is covered.

As far as I understand there are those who use exercises based on sounds or visual representations to manipulate chakras, heal blockages, balance them and so on. While I spontaneously feel a bit sceptical to some of the variants I’ve seen described, I don’t know enough about them to either provide decent critique or make reasonable comparisons. But there is one general observation that I’d like to make.

Most of us, if not virtually all, collect mental junk for years and almost never “clean up”. Over time it becomes an awful mess. Some forms of meditation seem to resemble a fine polishing cloth that is used to polish randomly here and there. Sometimes a larger piece of dirt might break loose and may then rattle around. That might lead to a lingering mental or physical pain while the cloth continues its random path.

In my opinion it is better to proceed as one would if one was going to clean up something that had been allowed to deteriorate and turn into a bad mess for far too long. Then one starts with the major problems first: piles of garbage, big pieces of dirt, large stains, and so on. Not until then is it meaningful to start doing any fine polishing. It seems reasonable that such an approach is likely to yield greater results quicker and with less effort. (Among the exercises described below, it’s mostly the one of spinning feelings that belongs to this category of dealing with the big things. It’s probably a good choice if one hasn’t been doing this sort of thing for long.)

I want to point out once again as on the intro page that everything that is described is for informational purposes only, and in the spirit of sharing ideas with likeminded people that are perhaps already into this sort of thing. So please note the disclaimer, and that you yourself have the full responsibility in case you try to apply any of it.

Frequency of practice

There are some brief simple things one can do very quickly in perhaps a minute or two, and some of these I do most every day. But deeper things such as spinning feelings on complex issues and adding some more techniques on top of that takes more time. A full session can then sometimes take an hour or more. That might sound much, but remember that once a week is quite enough and if one can’t easily put aside an hour of undisturbed time once in a while, life is probably too hectic to consider doing these things anyway.

If on the other hand one has lots of spare time and energy, one might be able to do it a bit more often. For a couple of months I often managed to do it twice a week. But that’s plenty. Then one of the sessions should perhaps be something minor, or to fix something closely related that popped up as a result of the first exercise. More than that though is probably pushing it, and usually not recommended. Of course there are no fixed rules and on occasion when getting a lot of ideas of minor things to deal with I’ve gotten impatient and increased the frequency. I guess one needs to go with ones intuition. Just remember that the full process is hardly ever entirely finished when the exercise is done. One also needs time to sleep on, maybe ponder, and generally get used to the changes that take place. An indication that it may be ok to do another exercise could then be that one feels that the previous one has “settled”.

Over time as I’ve progressed in clearing out blockages, and perhaps also due to increased proficiency with the tools, I’ve been able to increase the frequency and length of the sessions substantially. But partly that may be due to having dealt with most issues and now focusing on other exercises than spinning feelings, as I’ve run out of suitable topics for that one.

Sitting

First, regarding how to sit, one should keep a straight posture so the spine stays fairly straight. Also keep it vertical to avoid a kink at the neck, and try not to slouch. If one doesn’t keep the back straight one might, during some exercises where a powerful flow is generated along the spine, sense an uncomfortable pressure at the bend. That may then be mistaken as a blockage.

There is no need for strange lotus positions or anything like that. Instead it is important to make sure one is seated comfortably so as not to become distracted. This is particularly important if one is planning to do an exercise or series of exercises that may take a while. Again, bodily discomforts may easily be mistaken as blockages in some exercises.

Personally, I like to sit on a regular padded chair with my feet flat on the floor and my hands in my lap, palms facing upwards. Sometimes I use the back support; sometimes I sit more as if on a stool. Some times one might get a bit stiff around the shoulders. Perhaps arm rests would help for that, but I usually don’t use any. The hands are well to be kept one on each thigh, with the palms facing upwards.

Exercises

The following then are some exercises and general tricks that may be used when dealing with blockages and balancing the chakras, etc. Since I’ve used them for while now, I often mix them and improvise a bit as I go along. Therefore I will also begin with the simpler and general ones. Any one using any of these techniques should probably make them their own, and as they become proficient, experiment a bit and adjust them to eventually do what they find works best and what makes sense to them.

  1. Love and light in a shell.
This is just a quick thing that’s often refreshing and energizing. Imagine a transparent egg-shaped shell enclosing your entire body and a decent margin about it. Nothing can enter through the shell (although you may choose to make exceptions to this) so you are completely protected and safe. Now fill the entire inside of the shell with as positive feelings as you can muster. Just blast it full of love and bright shimmering light. Keep this up for a short while until you and the enclosed space around you feels refreshed and pure.Blasting away with loving feelings may also often solve things if for example one has a tricky sensation to deal with in the body while doing the spinning feeling (nr 4) or other exercises. Just direct it toward that specific body part and see if it will soften the problem up a bit. So if there is something one can’t quite get a handle on with other techniques one might try this. It often solves things and drives those old ghosts away.

  1. Intention and help.
Regardless of what one is attempting, I find the actual intention to get what ever it is solved is helpful and affects what occurs. Of course, at times it may just be best to observe what is going on and surrender to the process but other times the intention of how something should play out may also be useful.

One may also be aided by asking for help. Whether one considers this help coming from subconscious resources, somewhat reminding of NLP parts negotiation, or higher parts of the self, perhaps ones soul, angels, or what ever one believes in, is perhaps less important. But it’s a simple thing to try and I’ve often found it works quite well, even to the point of being one being one of the major tools I use.

It seems to work better if one is quite specific and precise concerning what one wants to achieve. But in general just asking for blockages arising from certain specified causes to be removed and the various affected chakras or interconnections to be rebalanced has turned out to be very efficient. In fact, there seems to be such intelligence and power behind this that I personally find it increasingly hard to maintain the optional view of attributing it to just some subconscious insights lying around in the nervous system; but to each his own, so make of this what you will.

Whether this would have been possible earlier on or is a result of my development so far I do not know, but like I said it’s an easy thing to try. If it doesn’t result in much initially, maybe it will later on. In any event, one important point in all this is that you probably have more resources than you realise. This trick can also be used to generate inspiration or ideas, and an idea may pop up a few days later.

  1. Grounding to get rid of old junk and reconnect to earth.
If you are able to direct “energies” through your body, you may send them down through your root and/or feet chakras into the earth. It can be done by spinning all the primary chakras and also a “combined” chakra of the feet so that the flow is directed downwards or, if you are more experienced, by just intending and directing the flow. Keep this up for a while. You may feel negative unpleasant stuff gradually slide downwards through you as blobs of goo or something. Now let the bad parts burn away as it is purified deep in the fiery interior of the earth. When you feel that you are done, stop the flow and then gently direct it upward again (spinning one chakra at a time or just through intention). The upwards flow is now free of impurities and fills you with positive energy.

  1. Spinning feelings.
For a long time I found this to be the most efficient exercise in general, and it was doing this systematically that got me started in all this to begin with. The rest I’ve added as I went along and became aware of chakras, kundalini and so on. Eventually I ran out of ideas of suitable problems to deal with and I’ve since moved on to other tricks, but I still think it’s an excellent thing to start with if one wants to get rid of old mental junk.

The full spinning feelingsexercise is described in more detail on a separate page. To be brief though, it’s about mentally re-experiencing something that causes or has caused problems in ones life, be they events, persons, general problem areas, ones own or others actions etc. This is done in order to bring unpleasant feelings back strongly enough that one can actually get a tangible feeling in ones body. The actual feeling is then mentally focused on, and after a while one notices it moving in some cyclical fashion, i.e. “spinning”. By imagining moving it out of the body, flipping the plane of the spin to reverse it, and then reinserting it in the same place, the pattern is dissolved. I’ve come to regard this as actually being a direct way of dissolving blockages in chakras. Often it’s just one or a few of them separately, but sometimes the pattern involves connections between some of them.

After doing this exercise, I often finish of with exercises no. 3 and no. 1 (in that order). Also, if the main thing was about some person, then I will sometimes slightly adapt no. 1 by starting it with no. 5 as described below.

  1. Disconnecting and closure of past relationships.
If I’ve dealt with issues concerning some person no longer in my life and that I also don’t want or expect to again have some connection to, I’ll sometimes do this. It is just a brief thing, and whether or not it actually “does” anything or not I don’t know and don’t really care. If nothing else, it feels good and may serve as a sort of symbolic closure.

First imagine being surrounded by the egg-shaped shell from exercise no. 1 and let it be filled with something like a gently glowing aura. Also imagine the person in question in a similar fashion some distance away, and that there is a cord or a number of cords connecting you and your shells. Now fill your shell with a blast of positive energy and let it travel down the cord to the other person and as it gets there, watch the energy pulse burn off the end of the cord and seal the connection/opening to the other persons shell. Do another blast of positive feelings so the cord drops from your shell and the opening to it is sealed. Then imagine the cord, or cords, dissolving and disappearing as they no longer have a purpose.

  1. Discovering new chakras and using kundalini sensations; some general ideas.
Sometimes one begins to become aware of chakras in new locations. It may perhaps happen while doing other exercises or in the days afterwards, and may first be felt as a tingling sensation, pressure or slight ache in an area or something similar. The basic thing to do in this situation is to just keep ones attention in that area and feel what’s going on while letting the process unfold.

If there is a general unpleasant emotional feeling associated with it, one might try to do a counter spin as in a simplified version of the spinning feelings exercise; just applying the part of detecting direction and reversing the spin. Also concerning spinning, after one is done with the various things mentioned here (no. 6), one might want to check whether the direction of the spin/flow seems to be in a proper direction as previously described.

If there is a feeling of somewhat painful pressure, which may often be localized along the mid channel, for example in the crown area, one might try to direct the spin so that the flow goes downwards for a while and then reverse it. This is somewhat similar to exercise no. 3, while not necessarily going all the way down.

Similar to these things if one has an active kundalini experience, is to just focus ones awareness on the related sensations. One may perhaps recall some memory or annoyance and feel what ever pops up. After a while, the feeling will slowly attenuate. Generally this is less efficient than the spinning feelings-exercise, as one may easily check by comparing the two. After the feeling has attenuated, direct your attention somewhere else and think of something different, or nothing for that matter, and then after a brief while think of the problem again. Usually the negative feeling returns, although somewhat diminished. That is usually not the case with the spinning feelings exercise. But sometimes the spin is wobbly or chaotic and just won’t stabilise, and perhaps directing positive feelings/love to the area doesn’t seem to help. Then simply following the kundalini-related sensations until the problem dissolves may be another thing to try. I might add though, that if one has cleared out most issues and the kundalini flow is quite powerful, this can be fairly efficient as well. Most minor blockages that pop up then seem to just get dissolved, sucked into and washed away as if hit by a powerful stream along the central channel.

Just following the kundalini sensations can also be a good follow-up technique in many cases, both directly afterwards and in the following days. Sometimes it seems only the main parts of a set of blockages and imbalances get sorted out by the primary technique one uses during a session and minor stuff may still be floating around causing some pain, mentally as well as physically. This can also be the case if one has gotten inpatient and tried to deal with too much at once. A useful thing to do may then be to take some time to just sit down with eyes closed and feel what’s going on. The idea here is not to manipulate anything but perhaps just directing ones attention to areas with special sensations, or to the secondary and primary chakras one by one; not focusing intently on each one for a long time though, as that may then loosen more stuff and is rather a separate technique in itself. This can give the kundalini flow a chance to clear the remaining debris out so that it gets sorted out quicker and with less distress.

  1. Bed time check.
When going to bed, I often like imagine a shell as in no. 1. I also like to just check the current state of the secondary chakras, so I go once around feeling the spin of each. Usually this means starting at the head and descending along the front, then going upwards along the back, and then down the front to the heart again and stopping there. This gives an idea of whether these chakras are in fairly good shape. Now they are almost always quite stable for me, but earlier on in the process I used this as an indication as to when some work was needed (periodically I have not been doing any exercises, in part due to lack of ideas). I also find this quite relaxing, and making it easier to fall asleep so it has become a habit. The main reason I don’t include the primary chakras in this is that I find that hard to do while lying down, although I have done so some times.

After each session

Depending on what exercises one has done and depending on how long one has been at it, it is possible that one sometimes enters a light hypnotic state or something similar to a light trance. I believe that in such a state one is less critical and more susceptible to ideas and information of any kind. (Compare with how small children will accept almost anything they are told.) Because of this it is important not to expose oneself to a lot of information directly after a session. Instead one should wait while the effect wears off, perhaps spending the time getting a snack, a glass of water, taking a short walk or just doing something simple of a practical nature around the house.

It seems quite common that this mechanism is used in cults, on purpose or not depending on how manipulative the group is, by starting a meeting with some meditation or other state-altering exercises and then continuing directly with a lecture, a question session or discussions, etc. Anyone who’s wondered how grown ups who get into cults can swallow most any ridiculous ideas and over time become a bit fanatical about them may have an important clue here, although group dynamics and other things also play their part. A great advantage with doing spiritual things on ones own is to be able to eliminate this form of influence, so make sure you don’t make the mistake of unwittingly indoctrinating yourself with what ever it may be immediately after doing some exercises.

Some ideas on things to work with

I think one should follow ones intuition of what issues to deal with at each point in time, but there have been periods when I’ve run out of ideas for a while and been fairly idle. So here are some ideas of what one might to try to work on. It might be useful to take notes of ideas as they pop up to have something to work on when one gets spare time. (It may also be rewarding to make some brief notes after a session about what one did and concerning any special experiences in order to follow it over time.) But even if one writes down ideas one can sometimes run out of things to do so I thought I’d share some suggestions of things to consider working on.

First I’d like to say that initially one might want to explore and deal with some major hurtful events in ones life. This most likely provides obvious and tangible feelings to deal with, which requires less subtlety of perception. Apart from dealing with probable major blockages, it therefore also gives good opportunity to begin learning how to use the techniques. Of course, if there is something that is extremely hurtful and one fears one might be overwhelmed by it, it is perhaps not the best learning situation. So something a bit less troubling, but still likely to produce emotions powerful enough to experience tangible feelings in the body, could be preferred.

Later on as one has dealt with various particular major events, it could be a good idea to explore recurrent themes in ones life. Note that insofar as these themes relate to interaction with other people it goes both ways, i.e. it includes others treatment of you and your reaction to it, your treatment of others and their (as well as your own) reaction to it. Of course one may also consider how one treats oneself. It’s a bit tricky to make a long list of various topics one might want to deal with, but some examples of presumably common things may be:

Accidents; diseases or fear of poor health; phobias or other irrational fears; quirky personality traits in oneself, or that one encounters in others; difficult single events or recurrent themes in the relationship with family and friends, or with colleagues, bosses, schoolmates; social position; violence, power games and manipulations; loss of family or friends; unhappy love or crashed relationships; poor communication, lies or dishonesty; ideologies and politics that one finds annoying.

If one has or have had some special songs one has often listened to while feeling blue, it can be a very efficient way of triggering old unresolved emotional difficulties so that they may be dealt with.

Another thing I tried when I was pretty much out of other ideas, and that seemed to have a surprisingly clear effect, was to try to do something about the supposed negative effect of various harmful substances that it is common to be exposed to. With clear effect I mean that the experiences during the exercise were very tangible and similar to the ones that usually arise during applying the exercises for other problem areas. I realise this may seem very far-fetched and I am a bit reluctant to include it, but I would be very interested to get some feedback on this in case any one else tries it with similar results. In any case, some substances one might want to try this with are for instance: alcohol, fluoride, mercury (amalgam), vaccines, side effects from medicines one has used, food additives such as aspartame, MSG, endocrine disruptors in food, hygiene products and the environment, etc. (Just to avoid any possible misunderstanding: If one needs medical care one should of course see a doctor, follow their advice and take any prescribed medication. But if there is a hypothetical possibility to get rid of any lingering side effects after getting well, I think it might be worth a try.)

Concerning all these things it is good to note that one should not underestimate how far back in time one can go and still find things that can be dealt with using many of these exercises, not least when one has become more used to them and has honed ones sensitivity and skills. They say that time heals all wounds, but that is obviously not true; they are merely forgotten and to some extent one learns not to tear them up. But if one wants to truly be rid of the pain, one has to work through the mess and deal with it.
